The COVID-19 global pandemic and full or partial shutdown of our schools has created tremendous uncertainty and stress for parents, students, teachers, and administrators. We know it’s all you can do to figure out when, where, and how you will be in school, much less worrying about extracurricular activities. While HRCA stands ready to coordinate directly with schools for any type of chess program as usual, new this year, we are offering an easy way for your students to enjoy the benefits and fun of chess with very minimal up-front coordination responsibilities for parent, PTA, or teacher volunteers. After you’ve registered your students and provided us a roster (student name and parent e-mail), your work is done!!! We’ll take it from there!
What: HRCA Virtual School Chess Clubs
When: Session 1 (first semester), Week of October 5th to January 25th, 16 sessions of 1 hour each. Choose a day of the week Monday through Thursday, and a time slot — either 3:00-4:00 PM, 3:30-4:30 PM, 4:00-5:00 PM, or 4:30 to 5:30 PM. OR Get the Principal’s approval to make chess part of the school day, such as during elective periods or lunch hours, and pick any school-approved hour while virtual school is in session! When choosing your time, please be mindful of the impact on enrolled students who may be returning in person part-time for hybrid school.
Where: On Zoom and our very own safe private chess server!
Who: Students in Hampton Roads area elementary, middle, and high schools — public, private, and homeschool cooperatives. Coaches are all background checked by HRCA and are certified coaches through US Chess!
Why: Because kids need some stability in their lives right now, and this is one activity you can count on when so many have yet to make a decision about if, when, and how they will resume. And because the critical thinking learned through the systematic study and practice of chess will help your child do better in school and learn valuable life skills, including focus, impulse control, decision-making, planning and organizing, calculating, pattern recognition, time management, and more!
How: We will be using the award winning Think Like a King curriculum, developed and used for decades in the New York City schools, with a focus on improving Critical Thinking through chess! Each one-hour session will include interactive instructional time on Zoom with your coach, followed by time to practice and play with your friends on our brand new private chess server. Fun weekly homework is assigned and completed in your Think Like a King training account, where you earn achievements every step of the way, and your coach can check on your progress. Our private chess server is available to you for an entire year from the start of your program, to practice and play whenever you like! You can even play in tournaments as an individual or team. If enough schools register for the program, we will organize a chess league to play inter-school matches on the Think Like a King platform!
Cost: Based on number of students you register (so be sure they are committed and not simply “interested” when you send the roster to us!) and school status
10 to 14 students: $100 each
15 to 19 students: $75 each
20 to 24 students: $60 each
TITLE 1 SCHOOLS, TAKE $20 OFF PER STUDENT.
Schools that want to pick up the tab for your students, we will work with you on even further reduced pricing.
HRCA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. We turn no child away for inability to pay. Ask about our needs-based scholarship applications. Parents may also request, by exception, a payment plan at no extra charge, and pay as little as $20/month (even as low as $10/month for Title 1 school kids).
HRCA sends out electronic invoices which can be paid directly online. Checks accepted if necessary.
Deadline for schools to register for the first semester session is September 25th. Student payments due by the first day of class.
