Chess for At-Risk Youth

Hampton Roads Chess Association partners with other chess organizations in our community, as well as organizing our own programs, to help bring the life benefits of chess to at-risk youth.  These children may be served in mainstream or alternative schools, community centers, juvenile detention centers, or anywhere the need arises.

Contact us if you are interested in arranging an online program for at-risk youth in person or via Zoom at no charge.

One such area program not affiliated with HRCA is the Norfolk Initiative for Chess Excellence (N.I.C.E.) run by Lisa Suhay.

Another great program is run by WAVY-TV’s Don Roberts — Chess Nutz Knights Network — which sends volunteers to play chess with youth in area juvenile detention centers.  HRCA only recently began partnering with this network and is eager to do more.
